Christmas Party Dec 02 2011

40+ at the Christmas Party

Last Friday evening a large group of impressively well-groomed Beaver Tails gathered at Linguini’s in Baie d’Urfé.  We were there to celebrate the holiday season and the (hopefully) imminent start to the ski season.  We had our own intimate area upstairs under the peaked roof. We started off by mingling and having a before dinner drink or two.  Then it was time to sit down and pick among three delectable choices for the main course.  By all accounts, the food and the conversation were all splendid and a good time was had by all.  Check out the photos on the web site.

Many thanks to Joanna Cumyn for doing all the work to find the restaurant and organize a very fine evening!

October 09 Oka 20 Thankful Hikers at Oka

We had no less than 20 hikers turn out at Oka on this beautiful Thanksgiving weekend.  And we had much to be thankful for.  The weather was unseasonably warm and pleasant.   It was already 18 C as we gathered just before 10 am and was up to 22 C when we finished at around noon.  Plus, as has been a Thanksgiving tradition the last few years at Oka, there were free apples, chocolate and Oka cheese awaiting people at the summit.  So we had an objective! Most visitors to the park take the Sentier du Calvaire d’Oka.  That is the more direct route to the “three chapels” lookout, where the food was supposed to be.  But that would have been too easy for our hardy band of hikers, so we walked to the east end of the parking lot and set out on the Sentier du Sommet trail.  This trail is actually designated as a mountain bike trail, and we did have to occasionally call out “bikes up!” to warn of oncoming riders. The first 2 km of this trail has some steep ups and downs.  After a few of these, several in our group challenged my description of this hike in last week’s update message as “easy to moderate”.  I tried to explain that these hills constituted the “moderate” part!   We soon completed this “moderate” section and reached a lookout point.  There used to be a warming hut, but it has disappeared and has been replaced by a couple of picnic tables.  On the map that Oka park hands out, it labels this point as the official summit, as opposed to the three chapels lookout. But there are trees surrounding this vantage point and there is not much of a view to be had. We kept following the quiet trail towards the three chapels summit where the free food was to be found.  Unlike the past couple of years, we did not take any wrong turns and we soon joined up with the last bit of the Sentier du Calvaire.  A few minutes later we reached the three chapels lookout.  There was indeed food being handed out by park workers to all comers.  And there many comers — the lookout was quite crowded!  We lined up at the food table and were handed apples, Oka cheese, and chocolate covered cranberries. After about 20 minutes of enjoying the treats and the view, we started down on the Sentier du Calvaire.  This trail has seven mini-chapels along it, each of which contains a painted wooden bas relief carving depicting a religious scene.  Since this was the main trail there were many more people on it, compared to the longer trail we had taken to the summit.  Half an hour later we were back at the cars.  The whole hike had taken just over two hours and we covered 8.15 km.   What a great way to celebrate the Thanksgiving weekend!

Lachine Sept 21

Wed we had 11 people out at Lachine, plus a couple of others on their bikes who stopped by to say hi.  It was pleasantly warm (shorts weather!) as we walked to the peninsula of Parc René-Lévesque.  Most of us walked about 6.5 km and were back by 8:30 pm.

First Walk Lachine

Last Wed we had 10 enthusiastic walkers out at our inaugural
Lachine outing of the Beaver Tails season.  They came by car, on foot, by
bicycle and even by motorcycle!  (See the photos on the website
Starting under a nice sunset, we walked our usual route.  We first went
east to the first lock of the Lachine Canal.  We crossed over the lock and
walked west towards Parc René Lévesque, where we did one loop of the
peninsula.  We covered 6.5 km and we were back by 8:30 pm.

Welcome Back!

Yes, summer is over.  All the signs are there.
It’s the middle of September, the kids are back at school, and the days are
getting shorter (sunset is at 7:11 pm today).  And is here yet another clear
sign that summer is really over — your first email from the Beaver Tails
Nordic Ski Club!

Now don’t get *too* excited, we are still a long way off from hitting the ski
trails!  But in keeping with our custom, we like to have a long and slow
ramp-up to the ski season with activities that keep getting us outdoors, even
though the days are shorted and the temperatures are dropping.  Your
Beaver Tails club is here to help fill that long gap between the end of
summer and the arrival of snow with a schedule of Wednesday evening outings and
Sunday hikes.

March 19 — 56 Revellers at the End of Season Party

The Beaver Tails took over the intimate confines of the Sucré Salé Crèperie last Sat evening.  On an evening when the “super” full moon was on grand display in the sky, a boisterous gang of us gathered to celebrate what has been another good year of cross-country skiing.  We had many great outings, including very successful weekends at Gatineau and Mont Ste Anne.

The crowd in the restaurant was already thick at Continue reading “March 19 — 56 Revellers at the End of Season Party”

Wednesday March 13 Mount Royal

On Wed evening, 13 of us assembled at Mount Royal:  10 skiers, 2 walkers, and 1 ice-skater/snow-shoer.  The trails had been tracked and were in great shape.  The temp was about -3 C so most of went with the violet wax.  It was yet another great evening of skiing at Mount Royal.  It has been a pretty good winter for skiing at the mountain, based on the number of times we have been able to get out there.  Afterward, fully 10 of Continue reading “Wednesday March 13 Mount Royal”

February 06 Viking Trails

20 BTers at the Viking Ski Club

As has been the pattern for much of this winter, the surprise snowstorm on Saturday night dumped much more snow in the city than up north.  When we arrived at the private Viking Ski Club in Morin Heights, we could see from the amount of fresh snow in the parking lot that they had only received 1 cm.  But no matter, there had been enough new snow over the last two weeks to cover all the trails.

It was about -2 C and mostly sunny as we assembled.  Some people put on blue wax, but Continue reading “February 06 Viking Trails”

February 02 5 Skiers in the Snowstorm at Mount Royal

The storm was still not over as Ray M and I drove from the West Island to Mount Royal on Wed evening.  But as we predicted, there were few cars on the highway and it was clear sailing.  Maria, Helene C and Cheryl were the other fearless souls joining us on the mountain.  The chalet was almost deserted.  The rental counter was closed due to the “flabergasting” conditions (according to the sign they had posted).  The trails had not been groomed of course Continue reading “February 02 5 Skiers in the Snowstorm at Mount Royal”
