Sun Nov 10

Well Sunday’s walk at Rigaud was cancelled due the fact it rained most of the day. So I hope you2013 11 09 Les Ced HH 01 got all those jobs done at home which you have been saving for a rainy day. Some more alert members of the club went out on Saturday before the rains came, see Hervey’s note below:
“At least 2 Beavertails hit the trails this past Saturday. We hiked the very  sandy ski trail of Des Cedres. This gave Muriel an opportunity to see what  she is in for this coming season. Conditions were mostly dry with the occasional muddy patch and horse souvenirs. There is no charge to use the  site until the x-country season begins.”
Christine BM also was out that way with some of her friends.

Lets hope for better weather next week.

Ski Clinic on Sat Jan 26

The club’s annual ski clinic will be on Sat Jan 26 at the Morin Heights Cross Country Ski Centre. The clinic is conducted by certified x-c ski instructors. It starts at 1:00 pm and lasts 1 to 1.5 hours. The club will pay for the lesson, you just have to buy a regular trail ticket.
This year we will have four classes instead of the usual three. We will have a class for skate-skiing in addition to the three classes for classic skiing at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. There is a maximum of 10 people per class.
We need to prepare for how many people want to take what level of instruction. If you do want to attend the clinic, send a message to the clinic organizer Glenn Kyte. REMEMBER to tell Glenn which class you want to take: beginner, intermediate, advanced or skate-skiing. The clinic usually fills up so don’t delay!

Gai Luron Dec 23 — 13 BTers Enjoy the First Ski Outing of the Season

Tom V’s report
This has to be one of the latest starts to the ski season we have had in years.  But with the heavy snowfall that the Laurentians received a few days ago, we finally had enough to kick start things.   Six members made it out for an unofficial outing on Sat at the P’tit Train du Nord on Sat, where they enjoyed a pleasant ski. See the forum for the reports that they and other members made about skiing at the PTdN and other local spots.
When I e-mailed the update message to you all yesterday, I told you that Gai Luron was almost fully open (28 of 32 km), because that was what the Skinet website was reporting.  But that turned out to be false — Skinet later updated the status to say that Gai Luron only had 4 of 32 km open!  But when reached by phone, the folks at Gai Luron said they expected to be mostly open by Sun.  They had enough snow on the ground.  The problem was that the heavy snow on Friday had brought down many branches and entire trees across the trails and it was taking them time to clear them.
So 13 of us showed up at Gai Luron on Sun morning expecting most of the trails to be open.  But we soon learned that the tree clearing had not gone well and they only had two trails open — the beginner “U” trail (3.1 km) and the intermediate “A” trail (5.1 km).  But for most of us, this was our first time out and 8.2 km of trails would be fine.
After waxing and taking the group photo, we set out on the trails (all two of them).  It was warmer (-8 C) and less windy than Continue reading “Gai Luron Dec 23 — 13 BTers Enjoy the First Ski Outing of the Season”

Sat Jan 5 — Ski and Pot Luck Lunch (RSVP)

The annual Ski and Pot Luck is in just two weeks on Sat, Jan 5.  We will ski (or walk or ice skate) at Mount Royal in the morning starting at 9:30 am and then go over at noon to Monique Isler’s place on Melrose Ave in NDG for a pot luck lunch.  If you want to participate, please send Monique a message telling her what you plan to bring so that she can make sure we have all the food bases covered

Prevost 2012 11 25 The Martin family secret

If you thought St Adolphe was cold you should have been at Prevost Parking lot on Sunday. Strong North wind and below zero temperatures had everyone leaping out of their cars and adding extra warm layers , hats, gloves or better still mits, only to find it was in adequate and also a  bathroom break was required. So come 10 am we were 12 and  everyone was more than anxious to get out of the wind. Fortunately the woods are soon reached followed by a steady climb so that after about 20 minutes most of the group could feel their hands again. Our Celebrity Guest  navigator for the day was Dennis M, who having been given the ceremonial map duly looked absolutely lost. Still it couldn’t be any worse than last week could it.
Dennis soon took control of the situation and before long we topped out at Mount Shaw where unexpectedly a BTNSC Flash Mob took place, obviously too many folk had been BTNSC Flash Mobwatching Big Bang Theory Flash Mob. With that excitement over we stumbled down a steep trail before cutting across to join the MOC trail and Lac du Paradis. We were not alone on the trails as we passed several small groups who were clearly jealous of our Celebrity Navigator however still managed a cheery “Bonjour”.

Skiing Notes for Boxing Day 2011 12 26

Well it looks like some people got out on Boxing day with varying degrees of success. 9 club members were out on Beaconsfield Golf course at different times in the day. We certainly enjoyed the sunny weather in the morning , and conditions were very acceptable. Jacques T and Winnie N enjoyed Angrignon Park for a couple of hours whilst Christine BM did not have the same success at Les Cedres. “it started out ok but then hordes of walkers and horses have also been out!” Photos have been posted on the web site.

Rigaud L’Escapade 2011 11 20

A dubious weather day did not prevent 25 walkers collecting at the Sucrerie de la Montagne on Sunday Morning, mind you 9 of this group had crossed the border from Toronto in the dead of night just to join us, or as Germain said “can my friends come on the walk”? My heart had been set on an early coffee but the 25 sets of wistful eyes soon melted my heart, and I am not talking about Lulu here. The plan, yes strange as it may seem we sometimes have a plan, was to walk the xcountry ski trail starting in a Northerly direction, completing the loop and finishing in time for tea. Al L started with us, however he had his own plan, I think Continue reading “Rigaud L’Escapade 2011 11 20”

St Adolphe d’Howard Nov 13

I believe it is time I came out and admitted to my addiction, it is with great personal pain that I must admit to being addicted to viewpoints. There I said it… No fancy rehab center for me, no chance to write on my face book page that I have taken control of my life, no instead I dragged 24 unsuspecting walkers and Lulu up to another viewpoint. Sadly this climb started immediately from the parking lot at St Adolphe d”Howard and was a little brute, taxing our hearts and lungs, so is the way of VPA (View Point Addiction). Even worse, when we reached the top it was a lunch bag let down, no vistas, no gasps of delight, just a vague looking lake visible through the trees. So down we went, keeping to the snow shoe trails, slightly damp in sections until we hit the ski trail 2. We were reasonably organised this week, mainly due to the fact that the lead group had maps and could read them. Like all historical trails they Continue reading “St Adolphe d’Howard Nov 13”
