Our decision to go to Gai Luron last Sun turned out to be a good one. It was -15 C and sunny as we got set to start just after 10 am. As we expected, their superior trail grooming capabilities took a cold day where there had been little new snow during the preceding week and produced magic. We were bowled over by how good the skiing was — literally in the case of Roy (see the photo of the week on the home page)!

Cap St Jacques Feb 11 2012
Saturday , we had another impromptu informal ski at Cap St Jacques. This time, it was initiated by a tweet that appeared on the website on late Fri afternoon. That was all it took to get a dozen BTers out on a chilly morning. The conditions were quite good, better than expected given the hard conditions leading into the weekend.
2012 02 04 — 18 Skiers at Cap St Jacques
Last Sat, we had an impromptu informal ski at Cap St Jacques. It was initiated by a comment on the forum on Fri at 6 pm from Dalia asking about a Sat ski and I responded with a suggestion to meet at CSJ at 10 am. I also sent a tweet, which appeared on the web site home page. Lo and behold, the next morning there were 18 of us on the trails!
The weather was sunny and about – 9 C. The group included the club’s youngest member, Melissa, aged 6, who was helped around the trails by her dad Glenn and a tow rope. Also Continue reading “2012 02 04 — 18 Skiers at Cap St Jacques”
2012 02 05 — 18 Skiers at Viking Ski Club
Sun we made our annual pilgrimage to the Viking Ski Club in Morin Heights. This is an annual treat for many of us, since we get to ski on the Viking Club’s trails, which are not ordinarily open to the public. Every year, there are some members who are visiting the Viking Ski Club for the first time and they come away impressed by the trails and the facilities.
We gathered in Continue reading “2012 02 05 — 18 Skiers at Viking Ski Club”
Mount Royal Feb 01
In the end, no Beaver Tails skied on Wednesday night, but maybe we should have!
In the update message I sent at noon on Wed, I said I was optimistic about skiing at Mount Royal that evening. The forecast was for snow to cover the layer of freezing rain that fell overnight. I even got a first-hand report from Jessica B that she saw skiers on the trails at 11 am. But then instead of snow during the afternoon, we got a steady freezing drizzle to add to the layer of ice we already got from the freezing rain overnight. When I called the park their recording said that the trails were untracked and icy. In the face of the drizzle, even Mickey passed on his usual Wed afternoon ski. I sent a message via Continue reading “Mount Royal Feb 01”
14 Skiers had a Great Day at Gai Luron Jan 29
Many of the people at Morin Heights were so tired after a full day there, they took the day off on Sun. As a result, there were only 14 people at Gai Luron on what turned out to be a very nice day indeed. And no, this is not just my assessment, which is sometimes viewed as being overly rosy. I also had to miss out on Sun. Here is the report from Roy T.
Conditions were great! They received 4 cm of snow overnight and all the trails were perfectly tracked. Some of us skied the back country trails off the “L” trail under ideal conditions. The morning temperature of -4 celsius, made for a perfect day of skiing for the 14 Beaver Tails who showed up. Definitely one of the nicer skiing days of the season……
Gatineau Jan 20-22
37 Skiers at Gatineau
The trip to Ottawa and Gatineau Park was a great success! Including the skiers who were visiting friends or family in the Ottawa area, we had 37 skiers turn out on the trails of Gatineau. The weather was great, sunny and -15 C on Sat, and cloudy and a few degrees warmer on Sun.
Most Beaver Tailers (including three canine members of the club) arrived at the hotel during the afternoon and early evening on Fri. This year, skating on Fri did not pan out. A section of the Rideau Canal had been opened for skating for the first time this year just a few days earlier, but that section did not extend to the part close to the hotel, so few people if any went skating that day. On Fri evening, many of the participants walked from the hotel to the neighbouring Byward Market for dinner at one of the many pubs and restaurants.
The next morning, we feasted at the sumptuous breakfast buffet while discussing where to ski. The thing about Gatineau Park is that the trails are spread Continue reading “Gatineau Jan 20-22”
Gai Luron/Ste Agathe — Cold But Beautiful! Jan 14,15
Last weekend was clear and sunny, but it was a tad cold, with morning temps of -18 C at Gai Luron on Sat and -23 C at Ste Agathe on Sun. But as those of you who have ever tried it know, with the right clothing skiing in such weather can be surprisingly enjoyable!
And so it was for the eight Beaver Tails who were spotted on the trails at Gai Luron on Sat and the eleven who met at Ste Agathe on Sun. I won’t bother trying to describe how nice it was those two days. Just check out the photos on the website. Go to http://www.skibeavertails.ca and click on “Photos” to see for yourself. After waiting so long for decent snow, it felt wonderful to be able to ski on in such marvelous conditions.
34 Linear Skiers at P’tit Train du Nord
It was decided at the pot luck lunch the day before to cancel our original destination of Gai Luron due to poor conditions and instead go to Mont Rolland and ski at the Parc Linéaire le P’tit Train du Nord (PTdN). What’s more, we also delayed the scheduled Dorval departure time by one hour to 9 am, a decision which I found disturbingly popular. Hmmph.
Anyway, as expected, Continue reading “34 Linear Skiers at P’tit Train du Nord”
47 Hearty Eaters at “Melrose Place” Pot Luck Lunch

Our annual celebration of communal exercising and eating began under a freezing drizzle at Mount Royal at 10 am. Despite the less than appealing conditions, 20 hardy members showed up at the Beaver Lake chalet. Eleven people set out for a walk on the mountain, seven donned their skates and took to the rink, and the remaining pair jumped on their mountain bikes(!) and took to the trails. For us skaters, there was a choice of the well-maintained rink adjacent to the chalet, or the just-opened wide-open ice surface of Beaver Lake. While it is always a pleasure to skate on such a large surface, the ice on Beaver Lake was bumpier. So after trying the lake ice for a few minutes, we Continue reading “47 Hearty Eaters at “Melrose Place” Pot Luck Lunch”
