Proposed hike for Sept 16, Sept 23 will be the bad weather alternate date.
Mt. Mansfield summit via the Sunset Ridge Trail, starting from Underhill State Park. This is a rather strenuous hike with beautiful views going up and down, and at the summit. Count on about 5-6 hours, depending on how long we hang out at the summit, where we will stop for lunch.

Note …it is best to try to get there early as the parking lot fills up fast. After that you park along the road which can add a couple of k’s to the hike depending on how far down the road you have to go! We should aim for a 7am departure from Montreal, counting 2.5 hr drive with border crossing, to be there around 9:30 and for the hike to start at 10:00am.

    Underhill state park website:

There is a day-use fee so bring some US cash. The website dated 2017 says $4 per person. So, it may be slightly more.

-Good comfortable sturdy footwear: hiking boots or shoes, or running shoes with thick soles.
-Hiking poles if you need to protect your knees (especially useful on the way down.)
-Clothes: Wear layers. Synthetic and wool. No cotton (It retains humidity so cannot keep you warm.) Windbreaker and a warm layer e.g. polar fleece for the summit. Rain gear if there is a risk of rain. Tuque and gloves if temperatures become cooler than now. Remember at the top temperatures can be significantly colder, it can be very windy, and we sit down to eat. So, if it is cool we need to conserve our body heat.
-Water (1,5 L recommended, more if it’s hot or if you drink a lot!)
    -Lunch and snacks

Mt Mansfield by the Sunset Ridge trail from Underhill park is a beautiful hike with a lot of open views from the rocky ridge. Count about 3hr going up and 2hr going down.
Here is a personal outing report from a hiker that I found. It has photos and gives you an idea of the hike:

Please email me ( on or before Thursday Sept 13 if you are interested for Sept 16. I will watch the weather and send out an email confirming or not to interested people on Thursday evening.
